I remember how terrified I was about holding up the other passengers…and then having to sit amongst their judgy eyes. The only bike-on-bus how-to I found was a poorly-written text description that did not instill me with any confidence.
So I did something about it.
This video is planned to be “evergreen”–it won’t get many views initially, but over the years will get discovered as people search for a how-to. I will also push it out pretty hard in the weeks before Bike To Work Day.
To best achieve the goal of reducing bike/bus anxiety, I went with the GoPro and a first-person, POV camera angle. The idea is my arms will be audience surrogate arms and my bike will be a surrogate for their bike.
As someone who knows a thing or two about anxiety, I’m hoping people new to taking their bike on transit will feel like they’ve already done it–doing something for the second time is much less scary.
I also realized this would be a good opportunity to make a “Facebook-style” version of the video that could be watched in the feed with the sound off. They’re exactly the same, except one has voice over and one has text-over:
I will be doing more text-over videos in the future because, for better or worse, this is where content is going. Watching a YouTube video takes commitment–not only do you have to be somewhere where you can have the sound on, but also it requires disrupting whatever feed you’re scrolling through.
Hopefully this video reduced your anxiety about taking your bike on transit. Please let me know if it did!
